'Eanswythe'. A variegated light brown & ecru Bamboo blend sock base, speckled and splodged with brown, ochre and rust tones, reminiscent of old bones. The bamboo content provides a beautiful silky lustre to the yearn, and adds strength without the need for man made fibres.

Bones from a partial skeleton of a human female stored in our local church, St Mary & St Eanswythe's, were confirmed to be that of Eanswythe herself by a group of experts earlier this year. The remains had been hidden sealed within the church wall sometime during the reign of Henry VIII to avoid destruction by reformers, and then found and placed in an alcove by Victorian restorers, but careful examination and carbon analysis showed they were from one person, a female aged around 20 years old, with no signs of malnutrition (so wealthy and/or high status) and definitely from the mid 7th century. This fits with the story of a 7th century Kentish Princess who founded an Abbey on the site after finding a 'miraculous' spring of water at the top of the cliff. That spring is still in use today (we call it the Bayle pond), as is the site which has been a place of Christian worship since those early Saxon times. Read more about the discovery here: https://www.livescience.com/uk-earliest-saint-bones.html

The colours of this yarn represent not only the bones, but the stone, wood and metalwork, plus the faded frescoes, of the church itself.
